The Divorce

(Guest post written by my buddy Aldo Mays)

Divorce is hard. I don’t care how long you’ve been married it’s tough to get out there on your own again and have to make a stand for yourself. My wife and I had only been married for about 2 years but we were together for 4 before we got married so I hardly remember what it’s like to live without her. We had a really amicable split but even as friendly as we are there were definitely times I was sad we couldn’t stop arguing about the smallest stuff. For example, I had to sit with her one day at her new place and explain electric companies in Dallas to her – she had never paid the utility bills before and now that she was going to be living alone I knew someone had to tell her. She got irritated with my “tone” and that’s how things unraveled that day. Pretty much the same way they did in our marriage over and over again. We have a lot of mutual friends, too, and though they’re all so great I know over time some of them are going to defect to her side and some to mine which is hard. I really thought we could split up without any collateral damage but it turns out the dog has been a real sticking point in our divorce. We’ve successfully done everything so far without even a mediator but the dog is mine and I will fight for him. I mean, I bought him myself the week before I met my wife so I don’t really see where she gets off saying she wants to keep him. I know it’s not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things but it’s really hard fighting with someone you still love and knowing you can never make it work. I wish my wife could see things from my perspective but you know, at the end of the day I think we’re both going to be much better off for this.
